I love your Substack. I just got my masters degree and I’m currently working at a juice store (among four other tutoring-esque jobs). Shits rough, good luck out there
thank you for the kind words, they mean so much to me!! and wow, i am sorry to hear that but unfortunately not surprised. and hahahahah tutoring-"esque" -- i think i know what u mean. good luck to you too, i hope soon your masters gets you a good job with better pay
lol ur like "ya 0.3 and 0.03 such an obvious difference....so how do you teach that...i mean not for me just curious how you would explain it...for students of course..."
This was— whew! Something else! The economy/job market knows how to screw us without the lube.
I like how you are standing your ground and creating boundaries while job hunting: I hate 9-6 and I like getting paid for “ shadowing” or first day job training. It’s only fair. Individuals and companies will get over us if we aren’t careful…
hahahaha it's truly anal w out lube out here. and yes! 9-6 is crazy. it's supposed to be 8 hours of work, and that includes lunch, bc eating lunch at work is not a real fcking break. if i get the offer ill ask for 10-6 and just tell her i wont take a lunch, and then just sneak some break time in here and there. thanks for the support on setting boundaries. we all need to ask for better.
The yeshiva position seems so draining for someone who cares. Glad you nope'd out of that. I lol'd at the recipe example! I literally used this example a few years ago to help an ex-orthodox woman understand how to balance chemistry equations (she is now a certified nurse).
There's bound to be a few kids in that class who will escape, but it's probably not worth sacrificing yourself. I've also heard from a friend who does educational workshops that yeshiva students are literally the worst.
FYI if you want to try something different from LinkedIN and fake postings hell, this site might be useful (I'm not affiliated with it in any way, but it seems legit, proceed at your own risk, etc.): https://hiring.cafe/
working at those schools is immensely draining, which is sad! id be curious to hear more stories from your workshop friend, lol. its truly wild because these girls are in these long skirts and you'd think they'd be so demure, shy, polite but they are (in the words of my yiddish-speaking grandma) vilde chayas - wild animals!! its crazy.
and haha thank you for lol-ing at the recipe example. truly bonkers but it works. and that is incredible that you helped that woman so much and that she's now a nurse! while i wish it wasn't the only thing the students cared to pay attention to, i do think it's important to begin to engage people where they're at in life and speak their language, so to speak. and clearly in your case it worked, which is lovely!
thanks so much for your comment and for subscribing 💗
and thanks so much for that website, i genuinely hadn't heard of it. i think smaller sites like that would have people more so legitimately looking for people bc theyre not the default, like linkedin as you mention. ill check out hiring cafe fs!
Well, from what I remember, the summer camp vibe you described is on point. The workshops weren't graded, so they didn't count. Like recess. My friend did say she was banned from talking about certain topics, like the age of the earth, or evolution. I could go on, but I'll get too ranty.
On the jobs front, I was just hanging with an Indeed employee last night, and their secret is they got their job from another hiring site! It's wacky out there! I hope you find something great soon!
I've been applying for jobs for a year and a half, and it feels like I've been holding my breath for that long. But your writing here, rather than exacerbating my anxiety, feels like you've passed me a SCUBA respirator for a puff. Thanks. Keep fighting and writing.
wow thank you so much for this reply, this is the dream for me as a writer. im sorry you're in this process too. it sucks, but i think its important we're all real about it and can at least be honest and have a laff
I already cannot wait for next week - i am so involved ! Your newsletter is my favourite non-escape from the shitty job market. It’s not indeed, but still on topic, you know?
i LOVED this comment, such a boost to my morning mood yesterday. hahaha love the idea of a non-escape. im happy to be a non-reprieve reprieve. im sorry that ur also dealing with the shitty job market. i think (obviously from my substack lol) that its important to be real about it and at least have funnnn. so here we are escaping without really escaping.
hahaha i will give u an advanced update before the next post -- i tried out TWO days in the producer's office, on the first day she asked me to come in the next day too, and she is trying out one more person next week (or so she says) then will make her final decision. im making two tiktoks for her today which is really my strong suit, so hopefully it sways her.
i will be posting updates abt my job search, dating life, money, social life, society and all that every week more or less plus book reviews and erotica and some short stories!
i am so glad you like my writing. im sure as a fellow writer you know how much these comments mean, so thank you so much! just a few sentences to really make my whole week.
oh interesting, id assume with ADHD you might actually enjoy the novelty and something new to stimulate u each week/night. but i can also see how a long-standing thing can actually be more truly and deeply stimulating (pun intended?)
anyway totally normal to not like a ONS! i dont love them either, i like something consistent (both in my sex life and in employment, LOL)
hahaha it is WILD. i had literally never experienced that before. thanks for the kind words, they mean so much to me u have no idea (or maybe some idea bc u also write) -- stay tuned for updates! <3
sending getting a job that doesn't totally suck vibes!! as a millennial - anyone who tells you they got their job through anything besides luck is absolutely a nepo baby/1% or refusing to admit it was luck. i have ended up in a state govt HR job that i really love but the path was years of retail - miserable hotel front desk job - pandemic layoff - temp agency filing job at state govt - turned into real job in HR purely bc my boss liked me.
absolutely not broadly replicable! i was throwing my resume at any sort of receptionist/assistant job out there and basically everyone looks at retail experience as nothing, nvm that i worked 5x as hard at a bookstore and dept store than office job. anyways - best of luck!
I really enjoyed reading this.
I hope you get a good gig soon!
thank u so much!! means the 🌎 as i start out writing on here. i appreciate the hopeful wishes too ! stay tuned <3
you are so funny, insightful and a joy to read. keep going and keep writing!!!!
yay thank you! im so happy you enjoyed reading it. each of these kind comments is such a boost

The worst part about this whole article is that I too cannot do simple math
lol ur like "ya 0.3 and 0.03 such an obvious difference....so how do you teach that...i mean not for me just curious how you would explain it...for students of course..."

Best of luck with the producer! And in all the other side quests you are involved in at the moment!
I am not a one night stand person. I just get bored with the ol' in n out, nothing to it.
Is this ADHD? Lol
